Slaton Manor occupies part of the former site of Wingfield, the
Tudor-style mansion of former Georgia Gov. John Marshall Slaton
(1866-1955). A chapter of one of Atlanta's most infamous events took
place here. Unpersuaded by the conviction of Leo Frank in the 1913
slaying of Mary Phagan, a case inflamed by anti-Semitism, Governor
Slaton commuted Frank's death sentence to life in prison. A mob
marched on Wingfield, threatening to kill the governor, who had to
be protected by the National Guard. Frank later was dragged from a
Milledgeville prison and lynched. Decades later, Frank was
exonerated by another Georgia governor.
